Children's Book Author Spotlight - Mark Gunning

Books develop and nourish kids’ imaginations, expanding their worlds. Picture books introduce young children to the world of art and literature. Novels and nonfiction books stimulate kids’ sensory awareness, helping kids to see, hear, taste, feel, and smell on an imagined level. Books inform our imaginations, inspiring creativity.

This Children's Book Author Spotlight Series is going to showcase independent children's book authors and their works. We strive to bring you the best there is to offer and an insight into the world of children's books!

This week we are featuring author (pic)

Tell us a little about yourself and how you came to write your first book.

I began writing back in 2010 after having an author visit my school. In 2017, I released my first book. Presently, I'm working on book five in my middle grade series for reluctant readers.

What inspired the idea for your book?

As I mentioned, I was inspired by a fellow author and decided to give writing a go. I have been writing short humorous stories about my friends and I growing up. I love getting kids interested in reading and find they really enjoy my unique style of writing.

What part of the book was the most fun to write?

I enjoyed writing the killer bee story. It's based partly on true events with a little bit of added exaggeration. My friend really did dress up like my character in the story. I just seem to have a lot of fun when I write. Story telling is just part of my life.

How long did it take you to write this book?

The idea of writing a book started in 2010, but the completion of the book didn't happen until 2017. I decided in January of 2017 that I was going to finish and publish my first book. Once I had it out, I began my second book and haven't looked back.

Has writing and publishing a book changed the way you see yourself?

Being a middle grade teacher, I've always been involved in the writing process with my students. I just love telling people I write stories for middle grade readers. I love seeing their reactions when I tell them. It's so cool when they tell me what their favourite stories are.

Who has been the biggest supporter of your writing?

I would have to say my students are the biggest supporters of my writing. They are always asking when I'll be starting another book. I love talking to them about the writing process. I hope it encourages them to become even better writers themselves.

What books did you grow up reading?

I enjoyed reading Garfield, Marmaduke, and Richard Scarry books.

Would you share something about yourself that your readers don’t know (yet)?

I used to get into a lot of trouble as a kid. My friends and I grew up in the country and had the luxury of hanging out on farms. It's helped me with the stories and characters that I create.

Anything you want to add?

Did you know that when I was younger I was a goalie? Maybe that's why I have a weird sense of humour.
