Experiment: Marker Coffee Filters

For this experiment, you will need;

-White coffee filters

-Markers (your choice of colors)

-Small cup

-Water

-Newspaper (or something else to set them on to dry)

Start by drawing a larger circle with a marker onto the coffee filter. Draw it around the base, where the circle already is. Just like you’re tracing over that circle. You can put down the newspaper before doing this in case the markers bleed through.

After you draw the circle, fold the coffee filter in half, then in half again. And in half one more time.

Fill the cups with only about an ounce or two of water (one ounce is 1/8 cup). You want to make sure that the water doesn’t touch the marker ring. Otherwise, it will just turn the water the color of the marker. We did have that happen to some.

It doesn’t take long for the filter to absorb the water, so the little ones won’t wait long before seeing some changes.

A few minutes later, pull them out of the cup to see what they look like!

After they dry, you can use them to make other crafts. Like turning them into flowers or butterflies! We didn't get to do this but I think we will next time we do this!
