Children's Book Author Spotlight - Josh Potler

Books develop and nourish kids’ imaginations, expanding their worlds. Picture books introduce young children to the world of art and literature. Novels and nonfiction books stimulate kids’ sensory awareness, helping kids to see, hear, taste, feel, and smell on an imagined level. Books inform our imaginations, inspiring creativity.

This Children's Book Author Spotlight Series is going to showcase independent children's book authors and their works. We strive to bring you the best there is to offer and an insight into the world of children's books!

This week we are featuring author Josh Potler.

Tell us a little about yourself and how you came to write your first book.

Originally from Baltimore, I now live in South Florida with my wife and two children. After aspiring to write a book for years it took a pandemic to give me the ability to make that dream come true. I turned my passion for creativity and my love for my children into a new endeavor.

What inspired the idea for your book?

I started doodling and wanted to create a superhero that was unique. I knew I wanted my superhero to propel somehow and it went from there. Originally I was going to use sharks because of my love for the ocean but skunks became a better fit.

What part of the book was the most fun to write?

I love call and response books, so counting off to blast off was the best part. My kids loving counting down with me!

How long did it take you to write this book?

Crazy enough not long. I started with the illustrations and it took off. Overall it took me about 3 weeks to write but about 4 months to have it in hand.

Has writing and publishing a book changed the way you see yourself?

I don’t really believe that writing or publishing a book has changed the way I see myself, but I do believe it has changed the way my kids see me! I love that writing and illustrating my books has allowed me to connect with my children on a new level, especially when they help with some of the illustrations! Pretty neat to show them “their work” when the books are published and they get to truly feel like they’ve taken part in some small way of helping Daddy with his projects!

Who has been the biggest supporter of your writing?

My wife Kathryn. She has pushed me to write not only my first and second books but to continue with more books in the Super Skunks series. Next up is Safari Skunks!

What books did you grow up reading?

Some of my favorite Children’s books growing up are The Sailor Dog with my favorite little guy Skuppers, The Giant Jam Sandwich by John Vernon Lord, and of course, the Where’s Waldo Series!

Would you share something about yourself that your readers don’t know (yet)?

Something about myself that my readers may not know is that I’m an avid fisherman and scuba diver! I live with my family in Fort Lauderdale, FL and a huge hobby of mine is spending time out on the water enjoying all that the ocean can provide in terms of fun and EVEN FOOD! This is also a large part of why my books are always focused on the nature or environment surrounding the Super Skunks and ensuring that they always leave it in better shape than they found it.

Anything you want to add?

What better opportunity to use this extra space than to list my top 3 favorite ice cream flavors!

1. Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food w/ Marshmallows and Chocolate Fishies!

2. Haagen Daz Cookies and Cream!

3. Haagen Daz Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough!

If I could trade my books for a pint of ice cream each and every time, I should say that I think that certainly sounds fair to me!
