Faith Over Frenzy: Helping Kids Find Peace During the Holidays

The holiday season is magical — twinkling lights, family traditions, warm cocoa, Christmas music, and excitement bubbling in the air. But if we’re honest, it can also feel a little… overwhelming. The calendar fills up fast, the to-do list grows longer by the day, and before we know it, December has become more frenzy than joy.

And our kids feel it too. Even though they don’t carry the weight of holiday planning, their hearts can absorb the rush around them. The overstimulation, the noise, the constant activity — it can leave them tired, anxious, or extra emotional.

But here’s the beautiful truth: we can help our kids find peace in the middle of the holiday whirlwind — not by making things perfect, but by making space for God.

Create Simple Devotional Moments

Children don’t need long, complicated routines to feel connected to God. What they need is consistency — small moments that gently anchor their hearts.

This could be as simple as:

  • Lighting a candle at breakfast and reading one Bible verse about peace

  • Saying one sentence of thanks each night at bedtime

  • Sharing a short family prayer before heading out the door

One mom shared how her daughter started reminding her each morning, “Can we do our verse now?” Kids crave rhythms that slow the heart. When we give them these tiny spiritual habits, we teach them that peace begins in God’s presence.

Slow Down With Storytime

Amid the holiday rush, storytime can become a sacred pause. Curling up with a Christmas book or a favorite devotional lets kids settle their minds and feel safe, calm, and connected.

Choose stories that:

  • Shine a light on kindness

  • Point children toward Jesus

  • Encourage rest, gratitude, and hope

Even five minutes of reading together can quiet their spirit in a way the world can’t. These soft moments often become the memories they carry into adulthood — the ones that whisper, “Peace isn’t found in the busy, it’s found in the still.”

Make Space for Creative Quiet Time

Kids often process their emotions through creativity. When the holiday chaos grows loud, artistic activities give them a gentle outlet.

Set out simple supplies:

  • Crayons

  • Watercolors

  • Stickers

  • Blank paper

Invite them to draw something that makes them feel peaceful… or happy… or close to God. While they create, you may be surprised at what comes out — stars, nativity scenes, hearts, angels, or moments from their day that touched their little souls.

Creative quiet time is more than art. It’s a way for kids to breathe. To let go of noise. To rediscover wonder.

Let Peace Start With You

Kids learn peace not only by what we teach — but by what we model.

When we rush, they rush. When we slow down, they slow down. When we choose faith over frenzy, they begin to see that peace is a choice we make in partnership with God.

Pause. Breathe. Invite Jesus into your to-do list. Your calm presence becomes their safe place.

Choose Memories, Not Mayhem

This season doesn’t need to be packed with activities to be meaningful. Kids often remember the simple moments most:

  • Baking cookies together

  • Watching a Christmas movie under a blanket

  • Singing carols in the car

  • Doing one small kindness each day

Quiet traditions matter. Slow traditions matter. Heart-centered traditions matter.

Give your kids a season filled with meaning — not just motion.

The holidays will always bring a little frenzy. But faith gives us a better way — a way to slow our pace, savor the moments that matter, and guide our children into the peace that only Jesus brings.

This year, may your home be filled with stillness, joy, and the gentle rhythms of a family choosing peace together.

A Prayer for Peace This Holiday Season

Lord, thank You for the beauty of this season. Help our family slow down, breathe deep, and fix our eyes on You. Give our children calm hearts and joyful spirits. Fill our home with Your peace — the kind that stays, even in the busy. Amen.
